To align with international climate standards, companies are focusing on reducing their own emissions and those within their value chains. Yet, the concept of Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM)—which involves reducing emissions outside a company’s direct influence—is gaining prominence as a crucial element in corporate climate strategies. This approach is highlighted in the Science-Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Corporate Net-Zero Standard.

One common method for BVCM is purchasing carbon credits from the voluntary carbon market. These credits not only support companies in their efforts to decarbonize but also facilitate internal carbon pricing schemes and generate social benefits in supported communities, like creating jobs and improving health and education services. However, carbon credits are often criticized for their lack of transparency and overestimated climate benefits. Furthermore, with new EU directives aimed at combating greenwashing, companies must be cautious in how they communicate their use of carbon credits to avoid increased reputational risks.

Join our webinar to explore the SBTi’s BVCM recommendations and examine the role of the voluntary carbon market in corporate climate strategies. We’ll discuss the potential benefits and challenges of using carbon credits to achieve environmental and social goals.
